Learn to Ski at Canaan

Canaan Valley Resort offers one of the premier ski locations in the Mid-Atlantic for newcomers to the sport. Over 30% of our terrain is dedicated to beginners and Timber Trail is a guest favorite (1.25 miles long). Group and private lessons are available.

Group Lessons

Learn how to ski or board in our beginner group lessons which are designed to offer individuals the opportunity to learn with other individuals. Learn how to move through the snow in a safe, fun environment, stopping and turning with others. Classes meet at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. When night skiing is available during holidays and prime season Friday & Saturday evenings, a 4pm lesson will be offered.  Register/check-in at the Ski School desk at least one hour before class time.  *Ski Lesson - minimum age 7 / Snowboard Lesson - minimum age 8.

Private Lessons

Private skiing or snowboarding lessons are available from our top instructors. Learn how to ski or board and enjoy a great winter activity. Sharpen those skills that may be giving you a little trouble. Lesson times: 9am, 10:15am, 12pm, 1:15pm, and 2:30pm. When night skiing is available during holidays and prime season Friday & Saturday evenings, a 3:45pm lesson will be offered. *Minimum age ski: 3 / Minimum age board: 8

The Canaan Cub Club

The perfect place for young children to learn how to ski with kids their own age and ability (age 5-8). Children will learn to move through the snow with qualified instructors. Rates include lift ticket, rental, and lesson (plus lunch for full day students). Space in class is limited, advanced reservations required by calling 304-866-4121 ext. 2630.

The Mountain Adventure

Perfect for children ages 8-15 who are ready to hit the slopes with a qualified instructor. With lessons in the morning and afternoon, there’s plenty of time to practice and have lunch in-between. Include lift ticket, rental and lessons (plus lunch for full day students). Space in class is limited, advanced reservations required by calling 304-866-4121 ext. 2630.

Requirements:

  • Reservations are strongly encouraged. Availability of instructors is limited.
  • A cancellation fee of $50 will be applied to guest's credit card with less than a 24 hour notice.
  • Lessons meet at the Children's Ski & Play School check-in desk located on the first floor of the Ski School Building.
  • All students must purchase a lift ticket and rental (unless otherwise stated).
  • The use of helmets (especially for children) is highly recommended for the safety of the child. Rental helmets are available at the Children's Ski & Play School office. Our retail store also carries children and adult helmets for purchase.
  • All children must be potty trained.
  • Afternoon half days are not available.

Specialty Programs

Canaan Valley Resort offers a host of Specialty Programs for advanced levels skiers/boarders and for those wanting to perfect their skills in Airboarding. 

Advanced Group Lessons

Advanced lessons (skill level 5 and up) are available for those skiers or boarders that wish to develop their skills and advance on the mountain. Instruction is one hour in length, and classes are offered daily at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. *Ski Lesson - minimum age 7 / Snowboard Lesson - minimum age 8. Advanced Group Lessons

Advanced Airboard Lessons

For the person who is ready to take on more of the mountain. Ride from mid-station down. An advanced airboard lesson is required for an advanced license. *Riders must be age 18 - older to take the advanced airboard class. Lesson times: 10:30am & 1:30pm.

Kids Advanced Airboard Lessons

The Canaan Kids Airboarding Adventure is the first of its kind. Your child will be able to slide down the beginner slopes on the airboard. They will have a certified instructor with them for instructions on the use of the airboard. The instructor will go over how to steer, stop, and the rules of the mountain for all guest. This is for the hardy at heart who want to have safe fun on the mountain and to do something a little different than skiing and snowboarding. Minimum age 9 years old to participate. Half day lessons only /rate includes airboard, helmet, lift ticket, and lesson. Half day lesson times: 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm.
