West Virginia Days Celebration – Canaan Valley Resort’s three-day celebration of the anniversary of West Virginia’s statehood includes a Civil War encampment and re-enactments, field games and crafts, mock battles and wagon rides. The family-oriented fun celebration is June 17 through 19.
WV Irish Road Bowling – Although the sport of road bowling originated on Ireland’s rural, winding roads more than 300 years ago, West Virginia’s country roads are just as curvy, and its hills are just as green, which lends authenticity to the sport. There’s even a West Virginia Irish Road Bowling Association, which officiates the highly competitive but easy-to-learn sport. This two-day event beginning June 19 takes place at Canaan Valley Resort and nearby Blackwater Falls.
Mountain Wilderness Survival Skills – Don’t let the breathtaking scenery fool you; Canaan Valley is a rugged wilderness area, and anyone who enjoys this mountain playground’s hiking and biking trails, wildlife-viewing and other natural features will benefit from knowing a few survival skills. This action-packed eight-hour class is offered in April, May and June. It includes expert instruction, demonstrations and team training and covers topics such as fire-making, shelter-building, backwoods navigation and wilderness foraging. The class is available to adults 18 and older and costs $130. It includes course materials, box lunch, water and a basic survival kit. The class is offered April 30, May 28 and June 11.
Introduction to Falconry – Led by Tucker County resident and master falconer Paul Fowler, this fun-for-the-whole family event is a fitting topic, since Canaan Valley Resort is situated in a wildlife refuge – the 500th national wildlife refuge in the country – and the region is a rich wildlife habitat. Fowler and his feathered friends – including Freya the Red Tailed Hawk and Sam the American Kestrel – share the history of falconry and some modern-day techniques of the sport. Held in the resort’s main lodge, the presentation is free and open to the public. This presentation is offered April 23 and May 7 and 28.
Canaan Valley Birding Festival – One of the biggest events of the year, the annual Canaan Valley Birding Festival is set for June 2-5. Developed for all levels of birders and nature lovers, the event celebrates the region’s vast array of bird species. The festival includes a variety of guided walks with expert birders as well as receptions and special presentations. The resort offers lodging packages that include accommodations, as well as selected events and some meals.

The hike is open to participants ages 12 and up (children must be accompanied by a paying adult) and costs $40.
Golf scrambles – The resort stages regular scrambles including one every Wednesday from May 25 – Sept. 5, plus holiday scrambles on Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day. There’s also a “Hit It Fore Your Good Health at Canaan” scramble June 5 to benefit the Tucker County Regional Health Fair.
